Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

1 .The display on my thermostat is blank

A.The thermostat has lost power for some reason. If you have a de-humidistat, please check to see if it is set properly. Some thermostats have batteries that need replacing periodically. For most models the batteries are located within a cover on the unit. If there are no batteries in the thermostat, it is possible that the circuit breaker to the indoor unit may have tripped. Reset the breaker. If it will not reset, or trips again, you should call for service.

2. My AC unit is frozen up

A. There are several reasons that this can occur. A service call is in order. In the meantime, please shut the air conditioner off. It needs to thaw out before the technici an can properly diagnose the problem. This way the system can be thawing out before the technician arrives.

3. In heating, at times, my outdoor unit is smoking

A. This is not smoke. It is steam. In colder weather, a heat pump outdoor unit can actually frost or ice up. When this happens, the unit will go into defrost mode. It will temporarily switch to cooling without the outdoor fan operating in order to thaw the ice. During this time the ice or frost turns to steam. The indoor electric heaters are also on during defrost to make up for the temporary cooling cycle. This defrost cycle should only last for a few minutes and the unit will return to normal operation.

4. How does an air conditioner work?

A. Air conditioners and refrigerators work the same way. Instead of cooling just the small, insulated space inside of a refrigerator, an air conditioner cools a room, a whole house, or an entire business. Air conditioners use chemicals that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and back again. This chemical is used to transfer heat from the air inside of a home to the outside air.

5. I have a de-humidistat control and a thermostat. How do set these properly while I am away for an extended period of time?

A. We recommend that you leave the thermostat set for Cooling, the fan switch should be in the Auto position, and the thermostat should be set at 80 degrees. The de-humidistat should be set at 60%. Upon returning, set the de-humidistat to the ON position, and set the thermostat for your desired settings.

6. My air conditioning isn't working. Is there anything I can check before I call for service?

A. Yes, there are several items that you can check that may save you the expense of a service call:

  • If the display on your digital thermostat is blank, check to see if there are any batteries that need to be replaced.
  • Check the circuit breakers for your system. Reset if tripped. If breakers will not stay re-set or trip again, call for service.
  • Check to see if your filter(s) are plugged up.
  • If you have a de-humidistat, please check to be sure that it is in the ON position.
  • If you participate in the Florida Power and Light (FPL) On-Call power management program, check to see if FPL has your system shut off. The box they installed will have a Red light on if they have your unit interrupted. The light will be green, otherwise.
